Preventative Dentistry

Routine Cleanings and Exams

Routine cleanings and exams are an important component of preventive health care.

A dental exam at Just Kids Pediatric Dentistry involves cleaning of the teeth and examination for gum disease, cavities, and dental alignment. During a routine cleaning and exam exercise, our doctors will evaluate your child’s risk of developing dental caries.

A routine dental exam at Just Kids Pediatric Dentistry might include dental radiographs and other diagnostic procedures. We will also discuss oral hygiene, diet, and other factors that might influence your child’s dental health.

Fluoride

Did someone say fluoride?  Fluoride is nature’s cavity warrior. It is a mineral that is used to prevent tooth decay by enhancing your teeth’s resistance to bacterial attacks. In children below 6 years of age, fluoride helps in the development of the underlying permanent teeth. As a result, it becomes difficult for acids to attack the teeth. Fluoride enhances tooth remineralization and disrupts the attack caused by acids in both children and adults.

What’s The Most Appropriate Age To Use Fluoride?

Fluoride is very important for infants and children  from 6 months to 16 years of age. During this time, the primary and permanent teeth are forming.  Research has shown that topical fluoride which is found in mouth rinses, fluoride treatments, and toothpaste is helpful in fighting tooth decay as well as strengthening developing teeth. Just Kids Pediatric Dentistry advocates for the use of fluoride varnish application at cleaning appointments every six months.

Sealants

Sealants are one of the best ways to help prevent cavities.  Our toothbrush has a hard time cleaning the pits and grooves on the chewing surface of our posterior teeth.  Dental sealants fill these pits and grooves to make the surface smooth so you can brush effectively as well as keep food and cavity-causing bacteria out of these areas.  Once applied on the tooth, the sealant bonds quickly with the grooves and depressions of the teeth. This bonding forms a shield over your tooth enamel that serves as a protective barrier to safeguard your teeth from decay.

Applying Sealants

The process of applying sealants is simple and painless.  The doctors and team at Just Kids Pediatric Dentistry will take just a few minutes to complete the procedure. This is how it is done:

  1. Dr. Jonathan Chang will first clean the biting surface of the tooth.

  2. The tooth is then dried and isolated to maintain a dry state.

  3. The tooth is then etched enhancing the sealants bonding to the tooth.

  4. Thereafter, the tooth is rinsed and dried.

  5. The sealant is then painted onto the enamel where it makes a direct bonding to the tooth. The hardening is enhanced with a curing light.
